A family’s guide to wound care at home

If a clinician is coming to treat your loved one’s wound at home, here’s what to expect — and how you can help between visits.

What home wound care actually looks like

A licensed clinician comes to the home, examines the wound, cleans and dresses it, and builds a plan to help it heal. They’ll come back on a schedule to track progress and adjust. You don’t need any medical equipment or training — that’s their job.

How you can help between visits

Keep the dressing clean and dry as instructed, help your loved one shift position if pressure is part of the problem, encourage good nutrition and fluids, and watch for changes. The clinician will show you exactly what to do and what to look for.

When to call right away

Increasing redness, warmth, or swelling around the wound; new or worsening pain; bad-smelling drainage; fever; or a wound that suddenly looks worse. When in doubt, call — we’d always rather hear from you early.

You’re not doing this alone

The hardest part of caregiving is feeling like it’s all on you. It isn’t. We’re a phone call away, and helping you understand what’s happening is part of the care.
